Test Knitting
A note from Ainur on test knitting for Toqu Tigu:
The majority of my self-published designs go through rigorous test-knitting. Test knitting processes in the handknit industry vary widely in scope and expectation, and it is critical for all parties involved to have clear understanding in their commitment to the intended goals of a test knit. Here, I outline my particular style for hosting test groups for my work to help you determine if you would be a good fit.
Timeframe: Test-knitting timeframes depend on the design complexity and size, but generally, accessories require 2-4 weeks, and garments 4-8 weeks, plus an additional week to procure the right yarn for the project.
Location: Test knits are hosted on a dedicated private Slack channel, where back and forth between designer and testers are heartily encouraged!
Compensation: I believe in the value of test-knitting and offer test-knit fees to all my test-knitters. Depending on the availability of resources and/or sponsors, I offer yarn support as well.
Goals: Test-knitters commit to finishing the item by the proposed deadline and provide a photo of the item worn by the person it was intended for. After the test knit concludes, I also ask knitters to fill out a test-knit survey to give feedback on their experience with the pattern they tested, as well as the test-knit itself. This feedback is an important part of the testing process and plays a key part in producing quality, high-standard patterns. It is a deeply appreciated and rewarding component of the test knitting process.
